Vernon Steve Kennedy, 73, passed away Nov. 13, 2017 at Mobile Infirmary Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 12, 1944 in Mexia and resided in Gainestown. He was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church and was a Gideon. Steve was the coordinator for the “Brotherhood Breakfasts.” He served over 20 years in the Army National Guard. At one time, Steve was an avid runner, participating in several marathons. In addition to Steve being a loyal, die-hard Alabama fan, he and his wife, Karen, enjoyed sitting on the back porch drinking coffee and watching their precious dog, “Sassy.” Steve really loved all of his family and loved their “family gatherings.”

Survivors include his wife, Karen Tolbert Kennedy, Gainestown; daughters, Deana (Shannon) Crim, Paige, (Dru) Slaughter, Raigan Kennedy, Erica (John) Jansen, all of Mobile; one brother, Col. John (Brenda) Kennedy, Nassau Bay, Texas; sisters, Peggy (Don) Ricketts, Grove Hill, Molly (Brooks) Townsend, Hattiesburg, Miss., Gay (Mike) Reynolds, Mobile; seven grandchildren, Blaine and Baylie Crim, Elizabeth and Kennedy Slaughter, Conner Steve Kennedy, John Thomas and Amelia Jansen; one dog, Sassy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon Sylvester Kennedy and Mavis Casey Kennedy.

The service was Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Bro. William Allison officiating. Interment was at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideons.

Active pallbearers were Elwood “Sonny” Overstreet, Nick Waugh, Rory (Toby) Robinson, Lamar Hudson, Eddie Pezent and Wayne (Grey) Jones.

Honorary pallbearers were Craig Weaver, Willie Donald and Brian Jackson.

St. Stephens Funeral Home directed.
