Eva Mae Matthews Phillips was born April 20, 1922 to Norma and Ward Matthews; she was 95 years of age. Mother Phillips was nurtured and raised in Grove Hill by her beloved aunt and uncle, Zeola and Payton Spears, whom she loved as Mama and Daddy. Baptized in the Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church, she remained a faithful member until relocating to New York in 1941, the year of Pearl Harbor. She became a successful hair stylist, however, in 1964 she returned to Mobile to be close to her mama and daddy. Upon her return, she renewed her fellowship with Orange Hill Baptist Church becoming head of the kitchen and a member of the adult choir. A resident of Mobile, she also joined the membership of Mount Olive No. 1 Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board No. 1 and in the Gospel Choir. She opened “Stylist Coiffure” and again developed a very successful business, with clients seeking “Miss Eva” out from near and far. In 2005, she was forced to close the doors due to a blood clot on her brain.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her son, Douglas Phillips; brother, Lonnie Mathews; and sister, Bertha Cleveland.

Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, Mother Phillips completed her earthly journey, having lived a long life of service to her fellow man, her churches, and to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Her sweet memory will forever be cherished by Sharon (Tyrone) Bradley and Floyd (Francine) Stewart, whom she helped raise from early childhood and considered her own daughter and son; brother, Ward Matthews Jr.; sister-in-law, Lorraine Matthews; grandsons, Douglas Phillips Jr., Maurice Phillips, Chauncey Phillips and John Douglas Phillips Griffin; her extended family, Walter King Jr., Roy Hamilton, cousins; and a host of friends and loved ones.

Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 18, at Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Grove Hill where Rev. Walter Sanders is pastor and Rev. Earnest G. Scott, eulogist. Interment followed in the Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Final life celebration was entrusted to Jackson Memorial Funeral Home.
