David Everett Downey, 87, died Nov. 29, 2017 at Jackson Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 23, 1930 in Philadelphia, Miss. He was a resident of Clarke County where he served on many committees. David worked as a HMT3 with ALDOT and retired after over 30 years of service. After retiring he opened “Downey’s Parking Lot and Street Markings.” He and his wife, family and friends enjoyed catfishing and jug fishing on the river and camping. David and Carolyn were married over 68 years and were “best friends and lifetime companions.”

Survivors include his wife, Doris Carolyn Bradford Downey, Grove Hill; daughters, Jimmy (Bill) Gates, Fulton, Willodean Jenks, Ann (Monty) Smith, all of Grove Hill, Jane (Wayne) Hines, Hendersonville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren, Dale and Heath Gates, Nicole Horton, Art & Steven Jenks, Diane Presnall, Micah Smith, Angela Norris, Blake, Austin, and Aaron Hines; 19 greatgrandchildren, Trey, Brittany, Mary Beth, Taylor, Raigan, Grace, Aubrie, Grant, Everett, Graysen, Lincoln, Lily, Gunar, Caleb, Mary Katherine, Olivia Grace, Candace, Robbie and Daniel; two great-great-grandchildren; one nephew, Billy Lee (Rita) Downey, Butler.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gus Downey and Nellie Mae Fagan Downey; a brother, Billy Downey; sister, Vera Cox; son-in-law, Ray Jenks; great-granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Presnall.

Active pallbearers were Larry Brunson, Keith Newton, Nick Steadham, Rodger Hare, Bo Powell and Randy Hare.

Honorary pallbearers were Ward Edge, Claude Agee, Elma Averett, Roger Barnes, Norman Downey, Jimmy Johnson, Barney McIntosh and Mikey Wiggins; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The service was Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at Tompkins Baptist Church in Grove Hill with Bros. Steve Jenks and Johnny Kendrick officiating. Interment was at the Tompkins Baptist Church Cemetery.

St. Stephens Funeral Home directed.
